How to compost - Our 5 Step Guideline To Getting Started - Step 2

What can I compost?

Step 2: What can I compost?

You can compost any material that was a living plant at one point. These plant materials can be divided into two categories: Browns and Greens. Green materials such as grass clippings, kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, etc., are materials high in nitrogen. Brown materials such as leaves, hay, paper, etc., are materials high in carbon. To speed up the composting process, these materials should be shredded, chipped, or cut so that they are no larger than 2 to 3 inches in size. There are several "recipes" for creating premium compost where a specific balance of carbon and nitrogen based materials are used. To create compost with the greatest variety of nutrients to add to your soil, use a wide variety of composting materials. We have a list of some of the most common items suggested for composting.
