Extend your vegetable garden's growing season six to eight weeks into the fall or beginning in late winter / early spring by sheltering your plants with a season extender. A physical plant shelter such as a row cover, hothouse or greenhouse can raise the temperature inside several degrees and protect your veggies and herbs from the harsher elements. With season extenders, there's no reason you can't keep experiencing a bountiful harvest well after summer has ended. Plant a fall garden of plants such as kale, broccoli and cabbages. You can also have a winter garden with items such as garlic, greens and shallots to harvest the next spring.
